Non-Intravenous Oral Sedation

In our office, we may use non-intravenous oral sedation for children who weigh less than 50 pounds. The medications we standardly use are Vistaril (Hydroxyzine Pamoate) and/or Versed (Midazolam). These medications may be given alone or in combination/in conjunction with nitrous oxide.

This technique is designed to relax your child and increase his or her cooperation, thereby making the proposed dental treatment easier and more comfortable. The duration of the sedation varies from child to child, but it can last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour for the actual dental treatment, followed by another 4 to 6 hours during which your child will be sleepy/drowsy.
